About a year ago my mother was diagnoised with high blood pressure. SCARY. It was a cause for concern for everyone in the family because according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), high blood pressure can be the primary cause if not a contributing factor to more than 1,000 American deaths EVERY DAY! It increases the risk for more lethal health conditions like heart attack, stroke and chronic heart failure. Although several members of my family work in health care as nurses, it was important to my mom that she give it everything she had to lower it through diet and lifestyle before resorting to perscription drugs. Of course, I wanted to be as supportive as possible.

Few things are more thrilling to this chick then a colorful, nutrient rich bowl of plants. From thinking about the flavor/texture combo, gathering ingredients, cooking and plating; putting these together is one of my favorite things do to and I feel so blessed that I get to do it. Not a day goes by that I dont think about how lucky I am to have access to such abundantly diverse food (and the ability to afford it) as so many people go without or not enough. Single lady dinners coming atchu strong today! And I mean nothing about your relationship status. I just mean for those nights when you are only cooking for yourself. For me thats most nights…, I am a bit of a homebody often choosing to hang in then go out with friends or family and since I am an LDR this girl is solo ALOT. Look at those colors. This dish is really something to feast your eyes on and I am not saying that in a way to take credit for its beauty, that is straight up mother natures game. And its strong. The topic of colors seemed to continually come up in conversation this past week with several different people. Like this past weekend in a training and development course I was taking a woman shared about the impact “having her colors done” had had on her happiness and confidence. It made going shopping all that more easy which for some of us, myself included, can be a very time consuming task. Essentially what “having your colors done” means is a color analyst will teach you what colors look good on you and what colors to avoid. It is based on your hair color, eye color, and skin tone. The process includes going through your wardrobe, editing it and learning what types of colors will benefit you in certian types of situations. Lets say you have an important meeting so you want to wear a color that has you be perceived as powerful or you are giving a speech and want to look inviting and likeable – there would be a specific color for that, too. Believe it or not, its science.

You might think it is odd to make a warming dish like this when it is so hot, but its the tail end of tomato season and I wanted to take full advantage of the hierlooms I picked up at the farmers market last week. And making an Indian dish for an Indian summer made me feel like I was in some sort of alignment with my surroundings. Like this was supposed to be made right now- not to mention I had all the ingredients on hand eliminating the need to go to Trader Joes which can be a zoo. Although it is still quite warm in LA it might actually be cooling down significantly where you are, so for those of you who are in legit sweater weather, this recipe is for you.
